The 2018 tax filing deadline for U.S. Expats living abroad is June 17, 2019.
This is a 2-month filing extension for taxpayers living abroad. However, any taxes due should have been paid by April 15, 2019. Any unpaid taxes are subject to penalties and interest. There are no penalties applied to tax refunds.
If additional time is needed, a 4-month extension can be requested using IRS Form 4868 (Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return). Submitting this form prior to June 17, 2019 extends the filing deadline to October 15, 2019.
The FBAR filing requirement coincides with the U.S. tax filing deadline. This allows tax returns and FBAR reporting to be done in tandem.
